After going to hear both featured artists lecture at Howard House on Saturday, I realized I had given Casis top billing here and needed to give Picton his due.

His Volumetric Drawings are something to behold. Since I left the gallery Saturday, I have been looking at cracks in the pavement like never before.

Please note that the work of both artists does not carry much heft when reproduced. In other words, there are many surprises in store for you at Howard House this month.

I drove by Howard House after nightfall last week and stopped to look through the window. The topographic Picton sculpture on the wall facing the street looked, in the darkness, like a misty cloud floating in the gallery. It is better than anything you’ll see from Maya Lin at the Henry.

I plan to come up north and check it out either tomorrow or before it comes down.

I'd like to see how the critics in Seattle tackle it since the Oregonian (in)famously compared his last Portland solo show to the work of a painting elephant... I'm not kidding, they may never live that down. A few month later he recieved a great review from Christopher Knight in LA. Hilarious.

Hey doublej,

What a hilarious story! If you can find the Oregonian 'elephant' review, post it here. We would all love to read it.

It is funny how the truth of significance eventually prevails.

Sorry it isn't online. It was very reactionary, talking about all the great press and his numerous shows all over the country.

My take was, "look you are doing something right to earn this kind of ultra reactionary review... besides, if a painting elephant comparison is the best they can do then the review has no sting."

Do you remember who wrote it? The Oregonian has had a number of freelance critics over the years since Randy shifted his focus to architecture and urban design. None of them have been any Christopher Knight, I'm sure. By the way, does he ever write for the LA Times anymore? I'm so out of it...

Regina weighs in on Picton's show, making a Maya Lin reference...I feel exactly the opposite as she does about both Lin and Picton. Regina words here.

"Picton's ice is nice. If I never saw it again, I wouldn't miss it."

Regina may reverse herself on this judgment, as she did with Alex Schweder a couple of years ago. She's no dummy, that one!

It was one of the freelancers for the O, she regretted it actually. Matt has such a following here that it created a really funny critical backlash.

Actually I read Regina's mention as slightly positive... so what if its cold??? you cant critique something for achieving its clinical goals and she seems to know that.

Yes Knight still writes for the LAT's (as evidenced by the picton review) but it's pretty infrequent.

I though Casis was just terrible... Sue Williams and early Essenhigh, without the command or edge of either.

Good points, double j. And we love your site, just as we love Portland. Keep us in the Rose City loop, my friend.
